If the EPUB has no fixed print pagination, the tool starts with an estimated page count and lets you replace it with the page total shown by your own reader.

Progress in context

How the progress estimate works

The Reading Time Estimator gives you an estimate of how long it will take to read a book in the catalog. It uses the book's word count and a standard reading speed to calculate the time. This is an honest estimate; your actual time may vary depending on your pace.

Books are grouped into time categories: quick (under 150 minutes), steady (150-300), immersive (300-600), and marathon (over 600). The median reading time is 347 minutes, so many books fall into the immersive category.

Quick Reads

Quick reads are under 150 minutes. These are ideal for a short sitting or a single evening. Examples include 'Henry goes prehistoric' (80 minutes) and 'The air splasher' (50 minutes).

Steady Reads

Steady reads take 150-300 minutes, perfect for a few days of reading. 'The confessions of a well-meaning woman' (305 minutes) and 'A girl and her ways' (257 minutes) fall near this range.

Immersive Reads

Immersive reads take 300-600 minutes, often spanning a week or more. Most books fall here, such as 'In the Tennessee mountains' (331 minutes) and 'The Eames-Erskine case' (297 minutes).

Reading Tracker Guide

Making Steady Progress with Pages

The Reading Tracker is designed to help you read a book at a sustainable pace. It records your progress in pages, not sections or minutes. You set a daily page goal, and the tracker estimates how many days you will need to finish. This turns a vague intention into a concrete plan.

How Page Estimates Work

When a book does not have a fixed page count, the tracker estimates it by dividing the word count by 250 words per page. For example, Wind of destiny — Context and Discussion has about 32,000 words, so the initial estimate is around 129 pages. If you set a goal of 20 pages a day, you will finish in about seven days.

You can replace the estimated total with the page count from your own edition or reading app. This is useful if you are reading an ebook with different pagination or a print edition with larger pages. The tracker will then use your number for all calculations.

Setting a Realistic Daily Goal

The default daily goal is 20 pages, but you can adjust it to fit your schedule. If you have limited time, 10 pages a day might be more realistic for a long book. For a shorter book like Wind of destiny, 20 pages a day gives a comfortable pace. The tracker calculates estimated finish days as the ceiling of remaining pages divided by your daily goal, so you can see the impact of changing the goal.

For a longer book, such as In the clouds — Reading Notes (over 160,000 words, estimated 644 pages), a 20-page goal would take about 33 days. If that feels too long, you might choose a shorter book or increase your goal. The tracker helps you make these trade-offs explicit.

Tracking Progress and Adjusting

As you read, you update your current page. The tracker shows your progress and recalculates the remaining time. If you fall behind, you can adjust your daily goal. The history is stored in your browser, so you can close the page and return later without losing your place.

The tracker does not record sections or minutes, so it is best used alongside the book itself. You can still note chapters in your own way, but the tracker focuses on pages as a consistent measure.

Planning with the Tracker

Before you start, decide on a daily goal that you can keep. For a book like Wind of destiny, a 20-page goal is manageable. For a longer book, you might start with 15 pages and adjust later. The tracker is a tool for consistency, not speed. By checking in regularly, you can maintain momentum and finish the book at a pace that suits you.
